We’re back with a new Story Time and Craft-to-Go!
This week’s Story Time theme is Thank You, Helpers, all about the people who help us in many ways, and about the many ways we can all be kind to each other.
The Craft-to-Go will be decorating stars for anyone you want to thank for being a helper; bags will be given out on Saturday, January 9th, from 10 -12. Please order yours by Friday at 6 pm so we know how many craft bags to make. Let us know how many bags you would like, one per child, thanks.
You can watch the video here, and order the craft through our order form, below. Just write craft-to-go in the form. Let us know if you need a glue stick, too! Order your craft, and books, games and puzzles, here.
We have been thrilled to offer bicycle delivery these last few months
and we will continue to do so as long as weather cooperates.
However, given the time change and a busy schedule for our fantastic
delivery crew, we will only be offering delivery to Auburndale, West
Newton and Lower Falls (02466, 02465 and 02462). Thanks for your
understanding and to the Phillips family for providing this service!
The HVAC work on the library building will be completed soon. Again, many thanks to the city for undertaking this project and preserving this special building. Starting November 3rd (yes, Election Day) we will again be offering pick up on Tuesdays from 11:00am-12:00pm. We will also continue to offer pick up on Saturday mornings from 11:00am-12:00pm. Please note the shorter Saturday hours. Unfortunately, the time change and shortening daylight hours preclude a Thursday evening option.
As a reminder, you can return books to the bin under the table only during To-Go pick up hours, but feel free to use our return/mail slot on Auburn Street at other times (for items that fit through the slot!). Also please remember to return all ACL books, with pink stars on the spine, to this library only.
We’re back! Online Story Times with Barb and Janet are starting again.
This week’s Story Time is all about apples, a fall favorite.
We are also now offering a Craft To-Go related to each Story Time with everything you need to create your craft at home. This week, create your own apple tree with our kit and add your own touches from home. You can use markers, cereal, buttons, anything you like to create your apple tree.
If you would like to order a craft bag, go to our Books To-Go
order form and type in Craft To-Go in the space for children’s book requests. You can order one craft bag for each child in your family, so let us know how many bags you would like. The Craft To-Go bags will be ready for pick up Saturday mornings at 10:00am on the table outside the library with your name on the bag. (In the case of inclement weather, the bags will be just inside the front door.) Please wear masks and practice social distancing at pick up.
For this first Story Time craft, we will be offering pick up on two Saturdays. Please order by Friday, October 16th for pick up on Saturday, October 17th and by Friday, October 23rd for pick up Saturday, October 24th.
Going forward, there will only be one pick up. Please check our Facebook page for future Story Time videos and craft info
It seems like just yesterday that we started the ACL Books-To-Go service! As the weather is changing, we are very excited and grateful that the City of Newton will be making some much needed updates to the HVAC system to ensure that our beautiful, historic building is heated and winterized. Since the work will be happening over the course of the next few weeks, we are temporarily changing our pick up times to Saturdays between 11am-1pm.
There will be no Tuesday or Thursday pick up times starting 9/21 until further notice. The Saturday pick up times will start Saturday, 9/25/20.
We will still be offering a delivery service which you can indicate on the book request form if you prefer that to picking up from the ACL. We will keep you posted when the work is done and we can offer ACL-To-Go during the week again. Books can still be returned via our mail slot in the side door facing the Pike and/or during our Saturday pick up hours in the bin by the table at the front of the library.
CALLING ALL ARTISTS…
Due to the current circumstances, our annual ACL GARDEN ART EVENT will be remote – Make At Home!
All ages and skill levels are welcome to create ART… from stones, sticks, branches, pine cones, leaves, recycled material, old balls and toys. Imagine whatever you think would look interesting, funny, or lovely, in our garden… and Make It! Please drop off your artwork at the ACL garden Saturday, July 11th, 10am- 12 noon, or leave by the green hose. We will apply a coat of polyurethane to protect your creation from the elements throughout the summer – to be picked up at a date to be determined in the fall. While we can’t be together this year, we appreciate your efforts to further beautify our gardens and we can’t wait to see what you have created. Enjoy and stay safe!
We have lots of new titles!
More bestsellers and books you requested are ready for you to order and pick up. And more are arriving every day.
It is helpful for you to check our catalog (enter Auburndale Community Library, no password) to see if the book you want is part of our collection – AND to see if there are any copies available. If not, we’re happy to buy it or put it on reserve for you. Request books to check out: ACL Books TO-GO Request Form
Our first week of ACL Books TO-GO! doorside pick up and bicycle delivery went
well, especially considering it is a new venture for all. Thanks to our loyal patrons for continuing to support our lovely community library. PLEASE continue to do so.
And please continue to be patient as you may not receive all your requests the first time around. You can also now return your books to the bins under the outside table Tuesdays, 10-12 and Thursdays, 5-7 or anytime through the return slot on the Auburn Street side door. Please no donations at this time.
A special thanks to all the volunteers who are working hard behind the scenes to
bring this service to our patrons, from purchasing, cataloging and covering books, to manning the request desk and pick up table and delivering books by bicycle.
We can’t wait to check out books to you!
To start, check our catalog to see if we have the books you want.
Then request items, by filling out this form.
We will contact you with the pickup date and time (dates and times may change — watch our Facebook page and posts for the latest info).
Orders will be filled as they come in. Please be
patient, our requests might take a week to be ready.
Books will be in a paper bag outside the ACL on a
table at the end of the ramp.
Be mindful of social distance when picking up books.
Bicycle delivery is available to certain ZIP codes! Please indicate this request on your form.
The ACL group, Newton Knitters And Needlers, is going strong remotely!
This Auburndale Community Library group continues to meet via Zoom from 10:30 till Noon on Saturdays. All are welcome to join! You can find more info about the group on Facebook, Newton Knitters and Needlers.
Read-Aloud from local author (and ACL Volunteer), Lenna Kutner
Lenna reads from her book The Magic of Norumbega. The story takes place in Auburndale’s own Norumbega Park back in the days when it was a legendary amusement park. Who can forget the Totem Pole Ballroom? The Magic of Norumbega was on Newton’s 2016 summer reading list for students going into 4th grade. This link should bring you to all the uploaded chapters.
Online Story Times
While we can’t welcome our littlest patrons on Tuesday mornings, Janet and Barb are regularly posting online Story Times with stories, puppet shows, songs and simple craft ideas. The latest was about new babies and big brothers and sisters. Coming up – Gardens and Father’s Day. For those that missed them, here are the links to all the videos: Are you a big brother or sister?, Earth Day, Building Books with Barb, Rainy Day Craft and Story, Fun with Puppets and Songs!, The Three Penguins Popper, Ukelele Sing-along, Puppet Show with Barb & Janet, Garden Craft
The ACL/ANA Book Club meets again!
Please join us Thursday, June 11th at 7:30pm on Zoom for our next Auburndale Community Library/Auburndale Neighborhood Association Book Club. We are reading The Bookshop, by Penelope Fitzgerald. It’s a short book we think will be enjoyable these days when so many of us wish we could walk into our local bookstores. Everyone welcome! Here is the Zoom link. The book is instantly available free on Hoopla as an ebook or audiobook, through your Minuteman Library Network library card.
