Youth volunteer Jillian is planning on a fabulous paper flower craft for the kidlets this Saturday. Join the fun between 11 am and noon. Children and their caregivers are invited to stop in anytime during the hour to enjoy a little winter crafting. The target age group is preschoolers/young elementary school kids, but any child who would like to do a craft is encouraged to join us.

Making the decision to move from your home of many years can be very difficult; it is important, therefore, to plan in advance and begin the thinking process well before it is necessary. Discovering What’s Next® invites you to join Harriet Diamond, Certified Seniors Real Estate Specialist and Coldwell Banker broker, Thursday, February 25, 2010, 6:30pm, Auburndale Community Library, for a Discover Realities Meeting-Up, Is It Time to Move?-The Decision & Planning Process.

Harriet will provide you with an understanding of the steps necessary to make the decision to move as well as the process to plan a move. She will address relevant questions such as: When is it the right time to move? Where will I move to? What are options for my next residence (a smaller home, a condominium, an active or assisted living development, a long term care facility)? What is the process to look for a new living situation? What steps should be taken to prepare my home for sale? How will I pack up a lifetime of clothing and furniture?

Understanding this process and the available options is important for adults contemplating leaving their primary residences as well as for care givers of aging parents. Minimizing the stress involved with this process is essential.

The ACL’s Ned Schofield has been on several service trips to Haiti over the years. Ned will join us for a discussion to take a brief look at Haiti’s history and geography, its people and culture. Then, the group will explore why the earthquake was so devastating and what could be the future for this impoverished nation. You will see photographic images that focus on the spirituality, dignity and generosity of the Haitian people.

We will see the truth in the old Haitian Kreyol proverb, Sa je pa we`,ke` pa tounen – “What the eye does not see, does not move the heart.”

A Sense of Wonder – film based on Rachel Carson – February 11th at 7:30pm

A Sense of Wonder (55 minutes) is an intimate and poignant film based on Rachel Carson’s own words. Rachel Carson (May 27, 1907– April 14, 1964) was a marine biologist, zoologist, acclaimed author and “the patron saint of the environmental movement.” Through the power of her knowledge and the beauty of her language, Rachel Carson was one of the great champions of the natural world. Actress Kaiulani Lee portrays the extremely private Rachel Carson in the final year of her life when Carson becomes a controversial public figure following the publication of her book, Silent Spring, in 1962. The book alerted the world to the dangers of chemical pesticides and launched the modern environmental movement. Shot on location in Carson’s cabin on the Maine coast by Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler, the film is based on Kaiulani Lee’s critically acclaimed one-woman play of the same name.

Ellie Goldberg of the Green Decade/Newton will lead a discussion of Rachel Carson’s legacy following the film.

The anonymity that the Internet affords also gives online scammers, hackers, and identity thieves easy access to your computer, personal information, finances, and more. In this free class at the Auburndale Community Library on January 28th at 7:30pm, Deborah will increase your awareness of safety on the net and provide tips to help minimize the chance of a security or privacy mishap. Being on guard online helps you protect your information, your computer, and your money.

Deborah Gelch is the Chief Information Officer at Lasell College, responsible for the functionality, development and implementation of technology across campus. With over twenty years experience in the field of IT she maintains a passion for computers and new technologies. She graduated from Wellesley College and received the Sigma Phi award for her research of IV Gem, a binary star system. Deborah has been very involved in the Newton community and public schools in fundraising and leadership positions.

Annual Meeting Thursday January 21st

According to the bylaws of our non-profit organization, we open our first monthly board meeting of the year to our entire community. We invite anyone who is interested to join us for our January board of directors meeting, where we’ll discuss general operations of the ACL, take a look at our finances, and continue future planning for our programming.

Pssst, do you know that the ACL has FIVE copies of the uber-popular book The Help by Kathryn Stockett? There are over 1000 “holds” for this in the Minuteman Library Network. We are so fortunate that people have been very generous in their donations of recent best sellers–our shelves are brimming with tons of desirable reads.

In that vein, if you received terrific books as gifts for the holidays and have already read them (or already had a copy!), consider passing it along as a donation to the ACL. (Don’t worry–it’s totally not cheesy to “regift” in this manner! Think of it as the gift that keeps on giving…)
